Are you a rental company?

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before renting a boat, a scooter or a car, or booking an activity with Rodeeo: bookings, documents, insurance, payment, fuel, pick-up and return.

The essentials

What is Rodeeo?

Rodeeo is an online booking platform that brings together independent professional rental companies. You can rent everything that moves on land and at sea (boats, jet skis, paddleboards, cars, scooters, motorbikes, bikes, quads, campervans) and book supervised leisure activities.

Where can I rent with Rodeeo?

Partner rental companies are strongly present overseas: in Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, Réunion, French Guiana and Mayotte, with desks at the airports of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and French Guiana. In mainland France they are mostly in Provence (Marseille, Cassis, Toulon, Aix-en-Provence), on the Côte d'Azur and in Corsica. Enter your destination in the search to see what is available there.

Do I need an account to book?

No. You book as a guest: just enter your contact details and pay online.

Who are the rental companies?

Independent rental professionals based locally. Each sets its own prices and conditions (deposit, minimum age, licence required, included mileage), which are always shown on the vehicle or activity page before you book.

Do I need a licence to rent a boat or a scooter?

It depends on the vehicle. In France, a boat licence is required to skipper a motorboat of more than 6 hp; below that, no licence is needed. For a scooter or a car, the licence required and the minimum age are listed on the vehicle page.

Can I also book activities?

Yes. Boat trips, guided tours and other supervised experiences are offered by the rental companies. Choose “Activities” in the search to see the available slots.

Is there a Rodeeo app?

Yes. The Rodeeo app is free on iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play). It shows every vehicle for rent around you on a map, keeps your bookings in one place and sends notifications so you can follow each rental.

With less than 24 hours to go, the booking can still be cancelled, but the full amount will be charged as a cancellation fee.

Yes, and we're proud of it. What's more, we work with independent local businesses, each offering a complete and distinctive range. With us, you'll find the perfect vehicle.

Documents

What documents do I need to collect my vehicle?

It depends on the vehicle. In every case, rental companies will ask for an ID document (DNI, passport, identity card) matching the name on the booking. If you're from the European Union, an identity card from your country is perfectly valid. If you're from outside the European Union, you'll need to show a passport. For motor vehicles, the rental company will also ask to see the main driver's valid driving licence.

What do I need to rent a vehicle?

To rent a vehicle with Rodeeo, you must be of legal age (in all cases) and hold a valid driving licence for vehicles that require one. The licence needed to drive the vehicle is shown in your booking details. If in doubt, you can ask the rental company directly via the chat.

Can I rent a (motor) vehicle with a temporary or probationary licence?

It depends on the rental company's rental conditions. If in doubt, contact us and we'll be happy to help.

Are there any rental restrictions linked to my driving licence?

It depends on the rental company's rental conditions. If in doubt, contact us and we'll be happy to help.

How old do I need to be to rent a vehicle?

It depends on the rental company's rental conditions. If in doubt, contact us and we'll be happy to help.

What if I'm under 25?

Not every vehicle requires you to be 25 or over to drive it. That said, it's a common condition in car rental, especially for premium cars. There's no one-size-fits-all answer: it depends on the rental company's rental conditions and on what is stated in the details of the vehicle you want to rent. If in doubt, contact us and we'll be happy to help.

How many years must I have held my licence to rent a vehicle?

Not every vehicle requires you to be an experienced driver. That said, it's a common condition in car rental, especially for premium cars. There's no one-size-fits-all answer: it depends on the rental company's rental conditions and on what is stated in the details of the vehicle you want to rent. If in doubt, contact us and we'll be happy to help.

I've just read the rental conditions and I don't understand everything. What should I do?

We do our best to make them easy to understand, but that isn't always possible. If you have a question about your booking, it's best to ask the rental company directly using the chat in your booking details. If you have questions about using the app or anything else, you can contact us directly via the contact form, chat, email or phone.

Insurance

What insurance cover is included with the rental?

Rental insurance is a world of its own and there's no single default rule. Customarily, third-party liability insurance is included where it is compulsory (motorised land vehicles). The vehicle specifications and the rental company's options and service conditions show exactly which cover is included. If in doubt, as always: if you've already booked, you can contact the rental company directly via the chat, and if you haven't booked yet, you can contact us.

Where can I find the details of the insurance cover?

While you search, you'll see the cover included, the rental company's rental conditions, and the accessories and other options offered by Rodeeo and the rental companies.

What does the insurance cover?

The terms of the insurance cover are set out in the vehicle's rental conditions. Contact the rental company via the chat or call us if you have any questions.

Can the insurance decline liability?

Yes. Insurance cover becomes invalid if you cause damage intentionally or through negligence (for example, driving in a prohibited or reckless way), or if you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

You will then have to pay the full cost of the damage!

Also, if you've had a problem, you must provide the required documents within the time limit set by the rental company; otherwise, they will not be liable for the costs.

What is the excess?

The excess is the maximum amount you'll have to pay if the rental vehicle is damaged for any reason: vandalism, accident, theft, etc.

How much do I need to put down for the excess?

It depends on the company, the vehicle and the cover. To give you an idea, the excess amount (you'll find it in the rental conditions) can vary considerably. Some companies may hold this amount on your credit card when you sign the rental agreement.

Is an excess mandatory?

No. To avoid the excess, you can take out zero-excess cover. It costs more, but the cover will pay for all damage and no money will be held on your card.

Is an excess the same as a deposit?

No. The excess is one thing and the deposit is another. The deposit is a hold that companies place in case they need to charge you for fines or other costs.

What are TPL, CDW, SCDW, TP and PAI?

TPL (Third Party Liability) is third-party insurance. It is included by default in rental contracts for cars and other motorised land vehicles.

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) is optional cover for damage to the rental vehicle. It comes with an excess. Most companies include it in the rental price, on top of the compulsory insurance.

SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) is the cover that comes closest to fully comprehensive insurance. It may or may not come with an excess.

TP (Theft Protection) covers the loss of the vehicle following theft or attempted theft. It does not cover personal belongings inside the vehicle. Many companies include it in the rental contract.

PAI (Personal Accident Insurance) is additional cover for personal injury, as most policies only cover damage to third parties.

Which insurance do you recommend most?

Full cover. It's worth it even for good drivers: you're renting a vehicle you don't know. What's more, you'll be driving on unfamiliar routes, which makes driving less safe.

Insurance with or without an excess?

If you can, go for zero excess. There's usually not much difference in price, and if something happens you save an excess of a hundred euros or so.

Payment methods

How can I pay for my vehicle rental?

The vehicle and any accessories booked with Rodeeo are paid by bank card, online, on the website or in the app. For options or accessories booked at the shop, you'll need to use the rental company's payment methods.

Can I rent a vehicle without a credit card?

It depends on each rental company's policy. If the rental company accepts a cash deposit, you can pay it that way. If you have any questions, you can contact the rental company directly via the chat in your booking details.

Can I pay with a debit card?

Some companies don't accept debit card payments (particularly car rental companies).

However, they may accept them if you add extra cover or prove you have sufficient funds in your bank account. These rental companies may only let you choose from certain models in their range.

Can I pay in cash?

Bookings are paid by card only, online. For deposits and extras not added when you booked, you can use the payment method shown in your booking details.

Does the main driver have to be the holder of the credit card used for payment?

It depends on the rental company's policy. Usually, the main or additional driver must be the cardholder. Each rental company applies its own rules. If in doubt, we recommend contacting the rental company via the chat in the Rodeeo app.

Can the rental company ask me for more than one credit card?

Yes, it's common practice for premium vehicles.

What if I want to pay in a currency other than euros?

For now, you can only pay in euros. For deposits, excesses and options not paid in advance, it all depends on the rental company. They usually accept card payments in euros or in the local currency. However, it's better to pay in euros, as paying in the local currency often involves exchange fees.

I've paid for the booking online. Where do I pay the rest?

Normally, there's nothing else to pay. Arrive at the shop a little early with your booking number and your ID. If you add other services at the shop, you'll pay for them there and then, using the payment methods specified by the rental company.

Do I need to pay a deposit when I rent?

Normally yes: all rental companies will ask you for a deposit / excess before renting you a vehicle. In the booking details, you'll find the amount and the accepted payment methods. At the end of the rental, the rental company will return the full deposit if the contract has been respected and there are no additional costs from your use of the vehicle (damage, theft, fines, etc.). Some rental companies may take between 1 day and 1 month to return it for vehicles that need more thorough checks. Don't worry, this isn't common.

How much is the deposit?

It depends on the rental company. It's shown during the booking process. If it isn't clear, you can contact us.

What is a card hold?

Usually, the rental company places a hold on your payment card (the deposit). In the event of damage, theft, fines or any other service not included in the rental, the rental company will deduct the costs incurred from this amount. If everything goes to plan, the amount held will be released / returned.

Are card holds standard practice?

Not always, but most companies will place one.

Does the deposit cover every incident?

No. The rental company will hold an amount (the deposit), but your liability in the event of an incident may be greater. These terms must always be set out in the general rental conditions.

How long does it take for a deposit to be returned / released?

It depends on the rental company; it's generally returned within anything from a few days to a month. This way, rental companies make sure they're covered if they receive a fine in your name or if there's a problem with the vehicle.

Fuel

What is a fuel policy?

The fuel policy is the part of the rental conditions that applies to petrol and diesel vehicles. There are several fuel policies.

The most common is full to full. This means the rental company gives you the vehicle with a full tank and expects you to return it full. In some cases, rental companies will provide a vehicle without a full tank. If so, point it out and return the vehicle with the same fuel level.

There are other policies, such as:

Pre-paid (partial refund): you collect the vehicle with a full tank and return it with whatever fuel level you like.

Full to empty: you collect the vehicle with a full tank and can return it empty.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to vehicles without a combustion engine. Electric vehicles are usually recharged by the rental company at no extra cost.

Am I charged for the fuel I use?

If it's a motor vehicle, yes. If it has no engine, you are the fuel.

Is it better to refuel myself or let the rental company do it?

The rental company usually charges the actual price of fuel on the day plus a service charge, which is set out in the rental company's rental conditions. We always recommend refuelling yourself, unless you're in a rush because you're worried about missing a flight.

What is the refuelling charge?

The refuelling charge is a service fee that rental companies charge for filling up the tank if they have to do it themselves and refuelling isn't included in the service.

What does the full to full policy mean?

Easy! You collect the vehicle with a full tank, enjoy it and return it with the same fuel level! If it was full, you return it full. If it was half full, you return it half full.

What is the pre-paid fuel policy, or QRS?

It's a fuel policy. You collect the vehicle with a full tank and return it however you like. When you pick up the vehicle, you pay for a full tank of fuel plus a service fee. Any fuel left when you return it? The rental company will refund the corresponding amount. The refuelling fee, however, is non-refundable.

What does the full to empty policy mean?

It's a fuel policy. You collect the vehicle with a full tank and can return it empty. When you pick up the vehicle, you pay for a full tank plus the refuelling fee. In this case, it's best to return it as empty as possible, because any fuel left in the tank unfortunately won't be refunded.

Which fuel policy should I choose?

We recommend the full to full policy: it's simpler and there are no surprises!

How is the fuel left in the tank calculated?

Unused fuel is calculated in 1/8 increments of the tank, as shown on the vehicle's fuel gauge.

How is the price of a full tank calculated for motor vehicles?

The price is calculated by taking the average market price of fuel over the days before the rental, between the cheapest and the most expensive petrol station, and multiplying it by the vehicle's tank capacity.

What type of fuel does my vehicle take?

Don't fill up until you're sure. The fuel type is specified in the booking details. The petrol station can also help, and you can contact the rental company via the chat too. Of course, if you rent a bike or another vehicle without an engine, you won't have this problem.

In Spain, petrol and diesel can go by different names. For petrol: SP95, SP98, Sin plomo 95, Sin plomo 98, E5, E10. For diesel, you'll usually see Gasoleo, Diesel, B7 and B10.

Which petrol station should I use?

Whichever suits you best. You'll find a list of Spanish petrol stations here: https://www.geoportalgasolineras.es. In France, Google Maps shows the ones near you.

I've put the wrong fuel in my vehicle. What should I do?

Don't panic! Don't start the vehicle.

Call the assistance number provided by the rental company: they'll tell you what to do and put you in touch with the assistance service.

If you can't reach them, call us! We're here to help.

Options and extras

Should I rent a GPS?

It can be a good option in a country where you don't have mobile data on your smartphone. In some cases, your phone's GPS is enough. If you're unsure, contact us.

Do I need to bring my own baby seat?

No, most rental companies offer baby seats and booster seats to rent. You can even book them directly on Rodeeo. If you can't see the option and you need one, contact us and we'll check availability with the rental company.

Are snow chains and winter tyres included?

Many rental companies will charge extra for a vehicle with winter tyres, so check in advance. As for chains, you can bring your own or rent them for a daily supplement, usually between €5 and €10.

Before booking a vehicle

Do vehicle rental prices vary?

More than you'd imagine! It depends on the season, supply and demand, and events in the city. There are as many factors to consider as there are companies. In high season, the rental price of some vehicles can rise (by 30% on average). Other vehicles, meanwhile, have special offers in low season.

Is the price shown the total price?

Yes! It's the total you pay to rent the vehicle and the options you've chosen. Keep in mind that there may be other charges if you use the vehicle for longer or for more kilometres than planned, in the event of an accident or theft, fines, etc.

Rental companies will ask you for a deposit, returned at the end of the rental (or according to the agreed conditions), to partly cover this kind of eventuality.

Is Rodeeo cheaper?

Of course! But that's not all… Rodeeo offers the best deals, but above all quality and a unique variety of vehicles owned by local businesses.

Can I pick up my vehicle in one place and return it somewhere else?

Normally not, unless the rental company allows and offers it. For more information, contact the rental company via the chat in the booking tab, or contact us.

What if I want to return my vehicle when the shop is closed?

You'll find the return instructions in the booking details. Not all companies allow returns outside opening hours. Those that don't won't appear in the search results for the times or days you've selected. Either way, once you've booked, it's always a good idea to confirm the time using the chat in the booking details.

Is there an airport surcharge?

Some companies charge a surcharge, in which case it will already be included in the rental price. It's a matter of transparency.

Can my vehicle be delivered to my hotel?

Some rental companies do this if you're fairly close by, or simply because they're super nice. When you rent the vehicle, ask the rental company directly using the chat.

Where do I collect the vehicle at a station or airport?

It depends on each airport and station. You'll find instructions for collecting the vehicle in the booking details. If they aren't clear, contact the rental company, who will give you more information.

Who can drive the rental vehicle?

The holder of the rental contract. Normally, that's the person who booked the vehicle. If not, let the rental company know so they can correct the rental details and adjust the price and rental conditions.

Is there a charge for adding another driver?

It depends on each rental company's policy. This information is shown in the search results, your booking details and the rental company's rental conditions.

How many kilometres can I drive?

It depends on each rental company's policy. This information is shown in the search results, your booking details and the rental company's rental conditions.

Is the price of accessories the same everywhere?

No, it can vary from one rental company to another. You can check the prices of the rental company you're interested in by opening the options page from the search results.

I'd like to rent the vehicle in the photo. Is that possible?

We make sure rental companies provide information that is as accurate as possible. Sometimes, because the vehicle is unavailable, because of accessories or for other reasons, the vehicle you rent may not be exactly the one in the photo. This is common practice in car rental. Of course, the vehicle the rental company provides will always have similar or better features than the one you booked.

Can I rent a diesel car?

For motorised vehicles, we show the fuel type during the booking process.

Do all rental companies offer the same types of vehicle?

Not at all: it varies a lot, and that's the big advantage of booking with Rodeeo. We're the only app that offers you such a wide range of vehicles to rent. Bikes, motorbikes, scooters, cars, jet skis, quads and anything else you can imagine. Here's to freedom!

Automatic or manual?

Ah, each to their own! Rodeeo recommends choosing vehicles with automatic transmission, as they are generally more reliable. It also reduces the risk of damage, which in some cases may be charged for.

Can I rent a vehicle by the hour or by the day?

Some of our partner rental companies rent vehicles by the hour, others by the day, but rest assured, we always apply the best rate!

What is the minimum rental period?

One hour with some rental companies, 6 months with others. It depends on the rental company's policy.

At pick-up

Can a rental company refuse to rent me a vehicle?

Unfortunately, yes. If you don't meet the vehicle's rental conditions, rental companies can refuse service. The most common reasons are not having ID or a driving licence, not being able to place the deposit hold on your card, or simply that they consider the risk too high.

What if I can't get there in time to collect my vehicle?

Let the rental company know via the chat in your booking details. If you don't tell the company, it is entitled to consider the rental as having started from the time stated in the contract.

My flight / train is delayed. What should I do?

We recommend letting the rental company know via the chat. If you don't, they will be entitled to consider the vehicle rented and therefore paid for.

What should I do when I collect the vehicle?

Check the vehicle! Better to spend ten minutes now than have lots of headaches later.

The rental company has a sheet with a diagram of the vehicle on which any damage is marked. Check the paintwork (scratches, dents, etc.), make sure the windows have no cracks and that the wheels and tyres are in perfect condition (for land vehicles, of course). Also check the interior for stains or any damage. If you find anything, make sure the rental company notes it on your rental agreement.

I've collected the vehicle, but...

Can I leave the country with the rental vehicle?

It depends on each rental company's policy. This information is specified in the search results, your booking details and the rental conditions.

I've had an accident with my rental vehicle. What should I do?

Don't panic, these things happen. The European emergency number is 112.

Once you're safe, contact the rental company to explain the situation and they'll tell you what to do.

The vehicle has broken down. What should I do?

Move the vehicle to a safe place and follow the breakdown procedure (hazard lights and warning triangles). Contact the rental company to report the breakdown. The rental company will come to your assistance.

The vehicle has been stolen. What should I do?

Report the theft to the police immediately: 091 in Spain and 17 in France. Then take a copy of the police report to the rental company, who will explain what to do next.

Things were stolen from the vehicle. What should I do?

Report it to the police immediately and keep a copy of the police report.

Then contact the rental company, who will explain what to do next, depending on the cover you took out.

The vehicle has disappeared. How do I know if it's been taken to the pound?

The impound service usually leaves a sticker on the spot with instructions for retrieving the vehicle. The local police can also tell you. To retrieve the vehicle, you'll need to show your driving licence and the rental documents. You'll have to pay the fine and the impound fees.

We recommend doing this as soon as possible, as the impound fees can go up day by day, as can the rental cost, and no insurance will cover this situation.

Returning the vehicle

Can I return the vehicle late?

The rental conditions state the grace period. We recommend contacting the rental company to let them know if you're running late. If you go beyond this grace period, the extra time (hours, days and sometimes admin fees) will be charged to you.

What should I do when I return the vehicle?

Check it with the person in charge at the shop. It'll take ten minutes longer, but it's worth it. We recommend doing this both when you collect and when you return the vehicle.

Check the condition of the vehicle and the fuel level. Make sure the report matches reality. Remember that the company held an excess on your credit card when you booked, and you'll want as much evidence as possible in case of any claim.

Can the rental company charge me after I've returned the vehicle?

Unfortunately, yes. Tolls, parking tickets, speeding fines, etc. There's no escaping them. Rental companies will usually deduct them from your deposit and, if that isn't enough, they may place an additional hold on your payment card. By signing the contract, you are legally obliged to accept any penalties.

We also advise you to always check that these charges are correct and, if in doubt, to ask for supporting documents. Administrative penalties will be sent to you directly by the authorities. The company may also ask you to pay a surcharge if the vehicle is returned dirty or damaged. Same advice: ask for visual evidence if the company doesn't provide it.

Do I have to pay fines and other charges not included in the contract?

Yes, as well as the admin fees. These can be around €40 to €45 for a fine, and up to €95 to €108 for assistance (cars).

For more information, see the vehicle's rental conditions.

I've received a fine that has nothing to do with me. What should I do?

Contact the rental company. When fines are issued, rental companies are legally required to give your identity to the authorities, who will send the fine to your home address.

If you think there's been a mistake, first contact the rental company to see whether the error is on their side.
